About Me

Hello, I’m Dr Jo Vlies, and I have always been deeply passionate about Women’s Health. This passion was sparked by both my remarkable mum, a GP and also my dad who dedicated his whole career as a gynaecologist to improving the health of women. After graduating from the University of Sheffield, I focused on building my expertise in women’s health. I gained additional diplomas in areas such as sexual health, contraception, and, later, menopause care.

I still remember the first menopause clinic I attended in North Wales, where I sat alongside my mentor at the start of my menopause specialist certification journey. The raw emotion I witnessed in the women there was overwhelming. These were women who had been dismissed, ignored, or simply told to "get on with it" despite their struggles. To see the profound impact of a specialist who listened, empathised, and provided practical, effective treatment was truly life-changing for me. That was when I knew: this was the area I was meant to focus on.

Like many women, balancing my demanding career as a GP with raising young children, supporting my husband’s busy career, and managing a household was not easy. I began to feel directionless and unfulfilled. I had missed out on a partnership job and, feeling disillusioned, I felt the need to pursue a new challenge.

Around this time, Davina McCall’s groundbreaking documentary on menopause sparked a huge shift in the way midlife women’s health was being talked about. The conversation was changing, and I felt compelled to get involved. I decided to pursue further qualifications in menopause care, recognising a significant gap in expertise and the urgent need for women to receive the support and care they truly deserve during this transformative life stage.

Since then, my work with women experiencing perimenopause and menopause has become the most fulfilling part of my career. Helping women regain their sense of self, improve their quality of life, and thrive during midlife has been a joy. I feel incredibly privileged to provide a space where women can talk openly about their experiences and receive the care they deserve.

As a GP and menopause specialist in South Manchester, I am committed to offering compassionate, personalised care for women navigating menopause. Whether you're experiencing hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, or any other symptoms, I am here to support you on your journey to wellness.
